The sound designer/engineer is responsible for collaborating with other creative team members and directors and specifically supports the production by:

-          Creating, collecting, editing, and programming sound cues and effects

-          Maintaining sound equipment inventory

-          Communicating with the Director of Performing Arts regarding inventory needs, repairs, or replacements.

-          Advising the Director of Performing Arts on new equipment purchases, technology upgrades,

-          Ensuring best practices for sound design and execution are adhered to.

The Umbrella operates in two venue concepts – A 350 seat mainstage and an 80-100 seat black box with flexible seating. The sound designer will have access to The Umbrella’s full range of sound equipment including consoles, PA systems, monitors, microphones, and communication headsets.

The typical schedule for each production is performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm, Sundays at 3 pm. Tech rehearsals begin the Saturday prior to the first performance. The sound designer is also expected to attend the designer run of each production and 2-3 production meetings scheduled at the convenience of the creative team.

The sound designer is an integral part of the creative team and, as such, we are seeking a dedicated designer who is willing to take ownership over the sound department and can support The Umbrella’s mission of producing Bold, Daring, and Innovative theatre. Applicants should have experience with both mainstage and black box shows, musicals and plays, and be capable of managing the varying tasks, requirements, and challenges that each production may present.

Those interested should send a resume and brief introduction to Brian Boruta, Director of Performing Arts – brian@theumbrellaarts.org

Salary is paid by stipend per production.

Position will be filled immediately once a qualified candidate is identified.
