Subtractive Painting
At the foundation of any successful painting is an understanding of tone and value. In this class we will begin by covering the canvas with a thin layer of paint. Then, by wiping away (“subtracting the paint”), we will learn how to create a full range of values within the composition. Additional oil painting techniques such as glazing and scumbling will also be covered. Multiple demonstrations will be given, and students will leave this class with a deeper understanding of how an oil painting is made. All levels are welcome.
