Free, direct, spontaneous, and expressive, impasto refers to the thick and heavy application of paint to the canvas. Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh are among the many artists who have used the impasto technique to create the richly textured, almost three- dimensional surfaces. If you are new to oil painting, impasto is an exciting way to learn about the medium.
